The Tradition of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the world’s most ancient and complete science of natural medicine. It provides a wealth of knowledge and time tested therapies to promote health in both mind and body. Ayurveda means “the science of life” and comes from the ancient Vedic tradition of India, where it has been practiced for more than 5,000 years.
Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the key elements in Ayurveda:
Vata is the principle of motion. It is made up of the subtle elements of Space and Air. It governs movement in Nature and in our mind and body. In Nature, wind (the flow of air) and the flow of water are governed by Vata.In our mind, thinking is governed by Vata.In our body, the movement of air through our lungs, the movement of blood through our body, the movement of food and nutrients through the digestive tract, and the movement of electrical signals through our nervous system are all governed by Vata.
Pitta is the principle of transformation. It is made up of the subtle elements of Fire and Water. It governs transformation in Nature and in our mind and body. In Nature, the transformation of heat and light into energy is governed by Pitta. In our mind, the transformation of what we see into what we know is governed by Pitta. Pitta also governs our emotions. In our body, the transformation of food into energy is governed by Pitta.
Kapha is the principle of structure. It is made up of the subtle elements of Water and Earth. It governs structure in Nature and in our mind and body. In Nature, the terrain of a country – its mountains, its soil, its rocks – is governed by Kapha. In our mind, persistence and stable happiness are governed by Kapha. In our body, our bones and muscles, fat, and physical strength are governed by Kapha.

The Revival of Ancient Knowledge
After many Centuries there was a decline in the practice and use of Ayurveda until 1980’s, when Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, founder of Transcendental Meditation™, gathered the foremost living exponents of Ayurveda to enliven this age-old knowledge in its completeness and original purity.
The experts who worked with Maharishi® included Dr V M Dwivedi (world renowned authority on Ayurvedic herbal rasayanas), Dr Balraj Maharishi (expert in Ayurvedic plants and their effects), and Dr B D Triguna (greatest Ayurvedic physician and scholar in India.
Dr Triguna has been the personal physician to the Indian Prime Minister, and presided as President of the All India Ayurveda Congress – the authority on Ayurveda in India. Maharishi Ayurveda® is complete Ayurveda, in accordance with the ancient texts.
“Maharishi Ayurveda represents the tradition of Ayurveda at the highest level of effectiveness and completeness as propounded in the classical texts.” – The All India Ayurveda Congress.
